  10. <p>The 319th was established in June 1949 as a Bombardment Wing at Reading MAP, PA, as a Reserve unit operating the B-26 alongside a variety of training aircraft. The unit moved to Birmingham MAP, AL in October 1949 before inactivating in March 1951. The unit was reformed as the 319th Fighter-Bomber Wing in May 1955 at Memphis MAP, TN with F-84s and T-33As, but was inactivated in November 1957. The unit was transferred to SAC as the 319th BW at Grand Forks AFB and activated in February 1963, replacing the 4133rd Strategic Wing with B-52Hs and KC-135As. The wing won SAC's Proud Shield bombing and navigation competition in 1969. The 319th converted to B-52Gs in 1983 and B-1Bs in 1988, exchanging the KC-135A for the KC-135R in 1987. The unit was redesignated 319th Wing in October 1991, but reverted to Bomb Wing shortly afterwards. The B-1Bs were transferred to the 319th Bomb Group in October 1993 prior to them being reassigned, with the parent wing becoming an Air Refueling Wing as the first of the three 'tanker hubs'.
